Top 5 movies to watch while you work!

Ever wondered what movies to watch in the background while hard at work? No worries, Gemma has you covered with her top 5 films for your background viewing pleasure!

If you are anything like me, running a business means plenty of time in front of the laptop, be that for marketing, accounting, or any of the 100 plus other business tasks we do each week. While I love getting down my to-do list, what I hate is doing it in silence. Some people choose music, others a podcast, or an audiobook but my favourite way to drown out the silence is with a movie. I have three rules for move watching while working, so it doesn’t tank my productivity:

I must have seen the movie loads of times before, to the point that I could pretty much quote the dialogue by heart.
The movie must have an uplifting or motivational message, giving me that surge of dopamine to keep me working.
I need the remote nearby, so I can control the volume and maintain background noise levels

Here are my top five go-to movies to have on in the background while working:

5. Moneyball

Sports movies, in general, are great at providing the rousing sense of human achievement, however to my mind, Moneyball is the pinnacle! It’s about using data to create a winning team (a message directly transferable to business!), going against convention, and the ultimate tale of the underdog.

4. Marvel Movies

This could be considered cheating, as there are currently 25 of them giving a run time of over 50 hours! Personally, I think this makes them even better workday watches because it is so easy to finish one and roll into the next! No decisions are needed. I would never call these movies formulaic, but they all, for the most part, feature good besting evil; in a quippy and action-packed style. To slightly misquote Captain America, “I could watch these movies all day.”.

3. Coach Carter

I know this is my second sports movie on this list, but hear me out. The Coach Carter scene quoting the poem Deepest Fear by Marianne Williamson is the most beautiful reminder to not stand in our own way or shrink from the potential of the path ahead of us. Coach Carter is the perfect encouragement to hit send on THAT email, go for that BIG contract, or say YES to that opportunity. Coach Carter makes me want to go to the baseline for my business every day.

2. The Pursuit of Happyness

One of my favourite sayings about business is that the path to success is never a straight line. If you have been in business long enough, you will have experienced setbacks, disappointments, and maybe even hard times. No film demonstrates better the need for grit and determination in the pursuit of your goals. Plus, Will Smith’s character sure knows the importance of following up with his leads!

1. Billy Elliot

Oh, how I love this film! The feel-good factor is off the charts. It’s a following your dream story set against a climate of adversity. For anyone that needs a dose of brave, Billy Elliot is the answer. Plus, the soundtrack is incredible. So what do you think? Are these your go-to work watches?
